Teddy Bear Squared - an 8 inch square  February 2010

Special Stitches

BLO - back loops only

FPdc - front post double crochet

3dc cluster - 3 dc half worked leaving last loop of each stitch on hook

     then pull a loop through all 4 loops on hook

Color change - old color double crochet half worked then pull a loop

     of new color through last 2 loops of stitch

Ch 2 does not count as a stitch and you leave the st it's in unworked till the end of round!

Join - Join in 1st dc or sc of round not in the chain!

Materials:

worsted weight yarn in 4 colors

     MC - main bear color

     BC - background & muzzle color

     FC - nose & eye color

     OB - outer border color

G hook - 4.00 mm

Scissors

Yarn needle for weaving in ends.

Muzzle with BC & FC

Rnd 1) With FC ch3 and sl st in 3rd ch from hook to form a ring, ch 2, work 5 dc in ring changing to BC, work 3 dc in ring changing to FC, dc in ring changing to BC, work 3 dc in ring changing to FC. Join. (12)

 

Rnd 2) With FC ch 2, work dc and FPdc in each of the next 5 sts, change to BC, 2 dc in the next 3 sts, change to FC, 2 dc in the next st, change to BC, 2dc in thelast 3 sts, change to FC. Join and fasten off FC. (24)

 

Rnd 2A) With BC pull up a loop in BLO of 1st dc, ch 1, sc in BLO of 10 sts, sc both loops of next 6 sts, sc BLO next 2 sts, sc both loops of last 6 sts. Join. Fasten off. (24)

 

Face with MC

BLO for round 4!

Rnd 3) Join MC with a dc in the next to last st of rnd 3, 2 dc in next st, (dc in next st, 2 dc in next st) repeat around. Join. (36)

 

Rnd 4) Ch 2, (dc in the next 2 sts, 2 dc in the next st) twice, change to FC, *3 dc cluster in next st for 1st eye, pull loop of MC through loop of FC, pull FC tight, fasten off FC*, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, change to FC, repeat from * to * for the 2nd eye, dc in next st, ( 2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts) 7 times, 2 dc in same st as beginning ch2. Join. (48)

 

Rnd 5) Ch 2, dc in the next 3 sts, 2 dc in the next st, dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in BLO of eye st, dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in BLO of eye st, dc in next 3 sts, ( 2 dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts) 7 times, 2 dc in same st as beginning ch 2. Join. Fasten off.(60)

 

Inner Ear with BC

Work in front loops only!

Join BC with a sl st in front loop of 6th st on rnd 5, skip 1 st, 6 dc in front loop of next st, skip 1 st, sl st in front loop of next st. Fasten off.

For 2nd ear, skip next 8 sts on top of head and work same as 1st ear. (2 sl sts, 6 dc) on each ear.

 

Outer Ears with MC

Join MC with a sl st in front loop of 4th st of rnd 5, skip 1 st, BLO work 2 dc in each of next 6 dc on inner ear, skip 1 st, on head andsl st in front loop of next st on head. Fasten off.

For 2nd outer ear skip next 4 sts on top of head and work same as 1st outer ear. (2 sl sts, 12 dc) on each ear.

 

Weave ear tails in toward center of face pulling them under the back loops of sts. The ends will all be hidden when the back of head is attached.

 

Back of Head with MC

Rnd 1) Ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook to form ring, ch 2, work 12 dc in ring. Join. (12)

 

Rnd 2) Ch 2, 2 dc in each st around and in same st as beginning ch 2. Join . (24)

 

Rnd 3) Ch 2, dc in next st, ( 2dc in next st, dc in next st) repeat around, work 2 dc in same st as beginning ch 2. Join. (36)

 

Rnd 4) Ch 2, dc in next 2 sts, ( 2 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts) repeat around, work 2 dc in same st as beginning ch 2. Join. (48)

 

Rnd 5) Ch 2, dc in next 3 sts, ( 2dc in next st, dc in next 3 sts) repeat around, work 2 dc in same st as beginning ch 2. Join. (60)

Fasten off and weave tail toward back side.

 

Background with BC

Place head back and front wrong sides together and front facing you.

Rnd 1) BLO of head front and both loops of back will be working through both layers on this round. Fold ears forward to work behind them easily. Starting on right side of face, join BC with a sc in the last st of rnd 6 on head before the join, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next st, 3 dc in next st- 1st corner, dc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, ( sc in next 8 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next st, 3 dc in next st, dc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts) 3 times, sc in last 4 sts. Join. (68)

 

Rnd 2) Ch 1, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next 3 sts, ( 2dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next st, dc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, * sc in next 6 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next 3 sts, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next st, dc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 2 sts*, work from * to * 2 more times, sc in last 3 sts. Join. (88)

 

Rnd 3) Ch 2, dc in same st as ch 2, ch 1, skip 2 sts, 3 dc in next st, ch 1, skip 2 sts, 3 dc in next st, ch 1, skip next 2 sts, fold ear back up and working through BLO of ear sts 5-6-7 and both loops of background, dc in next st, ( 2dc, ch 2, 2dc) in next st/ch space, dc in next st, now working on background only, ch 1, skip next 2 sts, *3 dc in next st, ch 1, skip next 2 sts, 3 dc in next st, ch 1, skip next 2 sts, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, , ch 1 skip 2 sts, 3 dc in next st, ch 1, skip next 2 sts, 3 dc in next st, ch 1, skip next 2 sts*, fold 2nd ear up and work same as 1st ear but on sts 6-7-8 of ear, dc in next st, (2dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next st/ch space, dc in next st, now working on background only, ch 1 skip next 2 sts, repeat from * to *, dc in next st, ( 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch space, dc in next st, ch 1 skip next 2 sts, repeat from * to *, dc in next st, ( 2dc, ch 2, 2dc) in next st, dc in next st, ( ch 1, skip next 2 sts, 3 dc in next st) twice, ch 1 skip next 2 sts, dc in next st, dc in same st as 1st dc of round.  Join. Fasten off.

(84 dc, 4 ch 2 spaces, 24 ch 1 spaces)

 

Border with OB

Rnd 1) Join OB with a sl st in any corner ch space, ch 2, (dc, ch 2, 2dc) in the same ch space, dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st, *(dc in next 3 sts, ch 1, skip 1 st, ) 6 times, dc in next st, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch space, dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st*, repeat from * to * twice, (dc in next 3 sts, ch 1, skip 1 st) 6 times, dc in next st, dc in same corner ch space as 1st dc. Join. ( 96 dc, 4 ch 2 spaces, 28 ch 1 spaces)

 

Rnd 2) Sl st into ch space, ch 2 and work in same pattern as last round except that the (dc in next 3 sts, ch 1 skip 1 st) will be 7 times on this round instead of 6. Join. Fasten off! Weave in ends.

(108 dc, 4 ch 2 spaces, 32 ch 1 spaces)

Bow at the bottom with OB

Ch 20, sl st at bottom between last 2 rounds of face, ch 20 and fasten off. Trim ends and tie into bow.

 

All done! Enjoy!

What a beautiful square. I can't wait to do this  one hopefully one day soon we will become grandparents again. and this pattern would be perfect. Great Job thanks for shareing with all of us.    Diana
